After being renewed in 2022, Criminal Minds: Evolution has landed season 2, having released on June 6, 2024. This police procedural crime drama TV series has already aired two episodes and will air more this year.
Rewinding the last episode, it is noticed that FBI agents have grouped to solve the mystery of the murder of the agency’s director.
Unlike Suspect Behavior and Beyond Borders, Evolution focuses on many long-standing criminal profilers of the original Criminal Minds. Those who work for the FBI as members of its Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU) are also cared about in the renewal of “Evolution.”
The majority of the cast from the original show has joined Evolution, including David Rossi (Joe Mantegna), Penelope Garcia (Kirsten Vangsness), Luke Alvez (Adam Rodriguez), Emily Prentiss (Paget Brewster), Jennifer Jareau (A.J. Cook), and Dr. Tara Lewis (Aisha Tyler).
However, viewers have noticed that two key members, including Shemar Moore’s Derek Morgan and Matthew Gubler’s Spencer Reid, have not shown up yet.
Though Derek Morgan, leading S.W.A.T., has less chance to make a comeback to Criminal Minds: Evolution, fans find it a possible way for Spencer Reid to return to the show.
Will Spencer Reid Be in Criminal Minds: Evolution?
It is heartbreaking to tell the fans that they will not witness their favorite Spencer Reid in Criminal Minds: Evolution season 2. When Joe posted a reel asking fans if they needed an office tour of David Rossi, they noticed that Reid’d risk on the photo.
Since then, fans started making theories about Spencer Reid’s possible return to the franchise.
However, showrunner Erica Messer turned down all hope when she revealed that Matthew Gubler’s schedule would prevent him from appearing on the show. She said:
It never worked out for Season 16 and then Season 17. Maybe it could have worked out, and then the strikes happened and then it hasn’t worked out for Season 17. But we love him. He loves us. It’s not any of that. It’s just we’ve got to find a time to make it work.
She added that the viewers will continuously witness Reid’s desk with the nameplate in the BAU bullpen throughout the season.
However, it is a positive sign, as Matthew stated the following about his comeback to the show.
Of course! I would be honored. I would absolutely love that. They did a newer spin-off of the show, but it was filming during a time when I was shooting something else. But I can’t wait — hopefully it will soon work out.

How can Spencer Reid Return to Criminal Minds: Evolution?
When the original Criminal Minds ended, Spencer Reid suffered from intracranial bleeding, leading him to hallucinate. However, such a condition for Reid is touch and go, so fan theories project that Reid will come back fully recovered.
Though the key character is missing in the first two seasons of Evolution, there are some strong clues that he may return soon.
Also, Deputy Director Bailey (Nicholas D’Agosto) informs that Reid and fellow agent Matthew Simmons (Daniel Henney) are assigned the classified tasks.
