House of the Dragon fans had a theory that Daemon Targaryen is the Night King, but Season 2, Episode 8 shattered all misconceptions.
When Daemon Targaryen touches the heart tree at Harrenhal and learns about the potential future danger from White Walkers, he goes off the deep end.
In his vision, he sees a man intertwined with a weirwood tree, seemingly Brynden Rivers, aka Bloodraven and White Walker, leading the army of the dead.
After that, a red comet, dragon eggs in fire, and Daenerys Targaryen with three baby dragons appear.
Sadly, he dreams of having his dragon, Caraxes, unconscious and himself counting his last breath in a body of water.
Next, Rhaenyra Targaryen seems to be sitting on the Iron Throne.
These visions in his dream tell about Daemon’s fate and House Targaryen’s future, connecting to events and characters in both “House of the Dragon” and “Game of Thrones.”
So, he is feared more about the coming monsters rather than being among one of them.
First, Daemon warns his niece-wife, Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen, about the attack of White Walkers. So, there is nothing as such for someone who prepares to become the Night King in the situation.
Highlights
- Daemon Targaryen spends most of Season 2 wandering around Harrenhal, haunted by his past and dreaming of ruling the throne in Rhaenyra’s place.
- In the season 2 finale, Daemon knows the prophecy of “The Prince That was Promised” by touching the Weirwood tree.
- In his vision, Daemon witnesses the linkage to Game of Thrones, including a young Three-Eyed Raven, White Walkers, and Daenerys Targaryen after her dragons hatched.
- The Iron Throne is important to unite the realm against a future threat, as foretold by Aegon the Conqueror’s dream.
Reasons Why the Theory of Daemon Targaryen Being Night King is Invalid
If you have watched the Night King’s origin story in Game of Thrones Season 6, you would have noticed there was no part of Daemon.
It was the Children of the Forest who created Night King 1000 years before the House of the Dragon.
Night King is not a Targaryen, and he is older than Daemon.

Those who claim the Night King is immune to fire, in relation to Daemon, need to check further. In fact, Targaryens are also not fireproof.
In House of the Dragon Season 2 Episode 8, we see Night King leading an army of the departed through Daemon’s vision.
Additional Information
- Daenerys is the Prince That Was Promised, not Jon Snow. She brought dragons back.
- Daenerys has a fire immunity, a unique power among Targaryens.
- Viserys informed Rhaenyra about Aegon’s dream, according to which the winter from the North could destroy the world, so Targaryen needed to unite the realm.
- After learning the prophecy, Daemon pledges allegiance to Rhaenyra, realizing his role in supporting her.
