Greta Gerwig’s Little Women is 7th Film Adaptation of 1868 Novel of the Same Name

Little Women (2019) was conceived in 2013 and to be developed at Sony Pictures.

Written and directed by Greta Gerwig, Little Women is an American period drama movie released in 2019. It is the seventh adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s novel of the same name.

Little Women is set in Concord, Massachusetts, in the 19th century. It chronicles aspiring author Jo and her sisters, Meg, Beth, and Amy.

Later, Laurie is added to a creative circle of March sisters as a new neighbor because their Marmee has organized the homestead when their father was in the Civil War.

Little Women stars actresses including Emma Watson, Saoirse Ronan, Florence Pugh, Eliza Scanlen, and Laura Dern.


The movie won 78 of 231 award nominations. Most importantly, it earned the 2020 Academy Award for Best Achievement in Costume Design, in addition to five other nominations.

The movie Little Women was widely appreciated by film pundits regarding the direction and performance of the cast.

On IndieWire, Kate Erbland remarked on Greta Gerwig’s approach as ambitious elliptical storytelling” in the movie, which helped balance heavy-handedness and preachiness.

Another critic, Anthony Lane from The New Yorker, was so impressed by Gerwig that she declared it to be the best movie made to date.

Handling the award to Gerwig, Brian Truitt of USA Today claimed the movie was magnificent, modernizing Alcott’s time and language and producing genuine nostalgia.

Besides the director, critics also praised the cast’s performance in the movie.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the movie cast provided “lovely ensemble work.”

In addition, Times took Little Women as one of the “100 Best Movies of the Past 10 Decades,” representing one of the best of the 2010s.

The magazine also added that the movie proved that there are new ways to tell old stories, making sure they are far beyond the current taste and lifestyle.
