Born in 1980 and raised in suburban Maryland, Leslye Headland completed her graduation in 1999 from Staples High School and earned her BFA degree in drama from the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University in 2002.

During her college days, Headland attended Playwrights Horizons Theater School and worked as a playwright in some plays, including Bachelorette, Assistance, and Surfer Girl.

After graduation, she worked as an assistant at Miramax for six years and entered the TV industry as a staff writer on the FX series Terriers in 2010.

Then, she debuted her movie-directing career by adopting her own play, Bachelorette in 2012. She also wrote the screenplay for the 2014 remake of the movie About Last Night.

In 2015, Headland produced and directed Sleeping with Other People.
